How Base works—energy done smarter

Base is a new energy provider that gives you backup power for power outages, and isn't incentivized to raise your bill over time.
THE PROBLEM

The Texas grid is under strain from higher power loads

The grid feels the strain when demand spikes or energy supply drops.

Think of a scorching Texas summer, with everyone blasting their AC—that’s high demand.

Or picture a calm, cloudy day with no wind to spin turbines and no sun to charge solar panels—that’s low supply.

Sometimes both happen at once. The grid scrambles to keep your lights on.

If it can’t, you’re left in the dark.
How it works

Base’s solution works for Texas homes and the grid

Base's shared model provides homeowners with affordable backup power by offering home batteries a lower upfront cost, as Base earns from the grid, not from members.

Get started
When the grid is up and running
The Base battery helps balance the grid through grid stability operations. This allows Base to get paid by the grid rather than by homeowners.
When the grid goes down
Base members get the full benefit of whole home backup protection from the Base battery.

What is Base? How does it work?

Base is your energy provider and backup power provider in one.

We install a large battery (from 25 kWh to 50 kWh) at your home for a low upfront cost. You get power from us at competitive rates because our batteries help balance the grid—charging when demand is low discharging when the grid needs support. When the power goes out, your battery automatically kicks in to keep your home running. Our current system protects against 97% of outages.

How much does Base cost? How much will I pay for energy?

To get with Base, you pay a $50 refundable deposit upfront. This deposit applies toward your one-time installation cost once your battery is installed.

Installation Costs

  • Installation fee: $695 or $995 (varies by zip code and plan)
  • Your $50 deposit will be credited toward this fee

Ongoing Costs

Membership Fee

  • $19/mo or $29/mo, depending on your plan

Monthly Energy Bills

  • Energy rate: 8.5¢/kWh plus your utility’s transmission and delivery fees
  • If you have solar panels, Base buys back any excess energy you produce at:
    • 3¢/kWh plus a real-time wholesale rate bonus

Why is Base significantly less expensive than alternatives?

Base offers a significantly less expensive backup battery solution compared to alternatives due to the unique shared business model: Base earns income from the power grid instead of homeowners.

This business model allows you to get energy backup without paying tens of thousands of dollars for a traditional generator. An expensive solar system and solar battery also requires a massive upfront investment which often can take longer than the lifespan of the system to pay back. With Base, you pay just a one-time installation cost that pays the team of electricians to install the battery on your home.

Base offers fair, fixed rates and reliable backup power. Since revenue comes from the grid, not customers, Base avoids hidden fees and surprise rate hikes. Your agreement also legally guarantees your rates stay below the market average.

Does Base require solar?

No, you don’t need solar to use our batteries. You don’t need solar to use Base because the batteries are designed to store energy directly from the grid. This allows you to access reliable backup power and lower energy costs without relying on solar panels.

That said, if you already have solar, Base works seamlessly with it. Plus, you can always add solar later—our batteries are designed to easily integrate with solar systems. And Base offers competitive solar buyback prices.
