Base offers a significantly less expensive backup battery solution compared to alternatives due to the unique shared business model: Base earns income from the power grid instead of homeowners.

This business model allows you to get energy backup without paying tens of thousands of dollars for a traditional generator. An expensive solar system and solar battery also requires a massive upfront investment which often can take longer than the lifespan of the system to pay back. With Base, you pay just a one-time installation cost that pays the team of electricians to install the battery on your home.

Base offers fair, fixed rates and reliable backup power. Since revenue comes from the grid, not customers, Base avoids hidden fees and surprise rate hikes. Your contract also legally guarantees your rates stay below the market average.

Yes! Cancellation of your previous provider will happen automatically after you enroll in Base. Base will cover up to $250 of your early cancellation fees.

To get reimbursed, here’s what you do:

  1. Pay the early termination fee to your previous provider.
  2. Send proof of payment to support@basepowercompany.com within 30 days of payment.
  3. Base will credit you on your next energy bill.

To get started with Base, you pay a $50 refundable deposit to secure your spot and kick off the permitting process. If you decide to not move forward prior to permitting, Base refunds the deposit.

Once your battery is installed, this deposit goes toward your one-time installation cost, which typically is $3,000 depending on your zip code and battery size.

Base also offers payment plans to make installation as affordable as possible. Base does not want cost to be a barrier to people who need energy backup.

After installation, you pay monthly utility bills just like you would with any energy provider. The difference is that Base guarantees your rates will be below the market average.

If you have solar, Base will also buy back any excess energy you produce at real-time wholesale rates + 3¢/kWh. To see how much you can save, send Base your latest energy bill at team@basepowercompany.com, and a Base energy advisor will provide a personalized cost comparison.

You can also see Base's latest plans and Electricity Facts Labels (EFLs) here.

You will pay your energy bill monthly to Base. Base will notify you via email when your bill is due. All members are automatically enrolled in autopay and paperless billing.

ACH payments are required for your energy bills. Battery payments as part of your payment plan can be paid via ACH or credit card.

After you are charged, you will receive a confirmation email from Stripe, the Base payment processor.

Your first energy bill may take up to 40 days after starting service. The bill date depends on when Base receives your first meter reading from the utility. After your first bill, you’ll be billed via email approximately every 30 days, and your auto-payments will process 17 days after each bill is sent to you.

Base operates today in select deregulated regions of Texas. A deregulated region means you can choose your energy provider.

Base currently operates in the north of Austin area and DFW Metroplex (excluding Dallas City). We're expanding quickly to both regulated and deregulated regions and can join our waitlist here.

The best place to find your energy billing and payment information is your Base Dashboard

Each time you’re billed for your monthly usage, you’ll receive an email with the subject line “Base Power Bill.” Each time you are charged, you’ll receive a confirmation email with the subject line “Base Power Bill Payment Confirmation.”

Battery payment billing information is coming to the Base Dashboard soon.

When you sign up with Base, you will input your payment information through the Base website to put down a $50 deposit and secure your spot.

After your installation is complete, Base will automatically charge the card you used for the refundable deposit to pay for the remainder of your installation cost.

If you have a battery payment plan, subsequent payments will occur on the same calendar date each month as the day of your installation.

No, you don’t need solar to use our batteries. You don’t need solar to use Base because the batteries are designed to store energy directly from the grid. This allows you to access reliable backup power and lower energy costs without relying on solar panels.

That said, if you already have solar, Base works seamlessly with it. Plus, you can always add solar later—our batteries are designed to easily integrate with solar systems. And Base offers competitive solar buyback prices.

For energy bill payments, you can update your payment information on your Base Dashboard. On the Billing page, click on the pencil icon next to ‘Energy Billing Details.’ All energy payments must be paid by ACH.

Battery payments are processed separately. To change the payment method for your battery payment plan, please email support@basepowercompany.com and the Base team can help you make the update.

Yes! Base works for you with or without solar.

Base batteries integrate seamlessly with solar panels without affecting your warranty or requiring any rewiring of your system.

Solar households choose Base for three key reasons:

  1. Power during outages: Your home stays powered even when the grid goes down.
  2. Extended outage protection: Your solar panels can continue recharging your battery during an outage, providing longer backup time.
  3. Competitive solar buyback: Base credits you for all your solar overproduction—whether it charges the battery or goes back to the grid—at real-time wholesale rates + 3¢/kWh

If you don’t have solar yet but plan to install it later, you can start with a Base battery now. When you’re ready, Base will integrate your solar panels by putting current transformers (CTs) on your battery.

Please coordinate with the Base support team to schedule this at support@basepowercompany.com.

When an outage happens, Base will notify you immediately via text and push notification. Make sure to download the Base app – available in iOs here and Android here.

When an outage happens, push notifications let you know that your battery is backing up your home.

If the outage is long and your battery life starts to diminish, Base will also notify you and provide tips on how to extend your battery duration – such as turning off your A/C, electric furnace, and other non-essential appliances.

Not at this time. However, the Base team is in the process of making this more flexible for members.

Currently, your energy billing date is determined by your meter reading date and your battery payment date is determined by your installation date.

The Base team puts time and effort into preparing for your installation and wants to focus that energy on those who are truly committed.

That said, if you change your mind, no worries! Your deposit will be fully refunded—no questions asked. It simply gives the Base team peace of mind as they ensure everything is ready for a smooth and efficient installation.

There are two separate Base agreements: the battery agreement and the retail energy provider agreement.

Here’s what it means to sign up with Base:

  1. Base will become your energy provider for the life of the battery and will renew your energy rates at a price below the market average.
  2. Base can access the battery when necessary and handles maintenance and warranty issues. All applicable warranties from the installer and manufacturer are transferred to you.
  3. If you move, you can transfer the agreement to the next homeowner at no cost to you or them.
  4. Since Base is in Beta, backup energy should not be used for life-critical devices and cannot be guaranteed.
  5. You will incur fees if the battery is stolen or damaged.
  6. If you ever want to cancel with Base, you only have to pay a $250 deinstallation fee. You don’t have to pay for deinstallation if you move after 5 years, transfer the agreement to the next homeowner.

Base was unable to charge the payment method on file due to an issue with your payment method. Examples include card expiration or insufficient funds.

To resolve the issue, please add a new payment method on your Base Dashboard or contact your payment issuer to fix the existing payment method.

Download the Base app to access your Base account!

When you enroll with Base, you’ll receive instructions on how to set up your account. After you’ve set up your account, log in

Your Base account allows you to do the following things:

  • Check battery and grid status. Base will notify you of an outage via text and through your member portal.
  • See live power usage. Base is the only energy provider that shows instantaneous power with battery telemetry.
  • Manage payments. You can update your payment method and view your bills.
  • Access your personal referral link. Refer a friend or neighbor and you both will receive a free month of power.

Base credits you for all of your solar overproduction each month. You can see your solar data on your monthly bill in the “Solar Credits” section.

On your bill, our buyback rate is the real-time wholesale (RTW) price for solar (“Solar Credit - Wholesale Avg”) plus an additional 3 cents per kWh (“Solar Credit - Base Bonus”).

Your Solar Credit amount is the rate multiplied by your kWh of unused solar. Underneath the credits, we also list your home’s solar usage (“Solar usage by home”) so you can see your usage alongside your overproduction.

If your bill is negative, Base rolls over your credits to the following month.

No. The State of Texas passed Property Code §202.010 allowing for those in HOAs to install “Solar Energy Devices” (as defined in Tax Code §171.107), which include batteries like Base.

As such, you are entitled to the right to have the Base system installed.

If you'd like to request an information packed for your HOA, please email us at team@basepowercompany.com

Base is your Retail Electric Provider (REP), but your energy comes from a Transmission & Distribution Utility (TDU) such as Oncor.

Your utility delivery charges are service fees from the TDU, which Base passes onto you with no additional markup. Your average price includes our rate plus the utility delivery charges.

Yes! Base has a great referral program. Base members are essential for spreading the word about Base and getting more neighborhoods involved.

Existing members can send friends, family, neighbors, or strangers their personal referral link, which you can access in your Base account.

Refer a friend and you both will receive a free month of power when their battery is installed.

No, you only pay for what you use.

Base excludes battery charging costs from your bill via the “Battery Credit”, which measures the amount of energy used to charge the battery and the amount of energy used to power your home.

Base credits you for the cost of the energy used to charge the battery (Battery Credit Energy Charges), as well as the Oncor transmission and delivery fees associated with the energy used to charge (Battery Credit Utility Charges).

Generation Meter Reading: The amount of energy you sent back to the grid. This includes energy from your battery discharging to the grid and any excess solar energy if applicable. Base calculates this by subtracting your last meter reading from your current one.

Consumption Meter Reading: The amount of energy you took from the grid. This includes energy used to power your home and energy Base used (and paid for) to charge your battery. Base calculates this by subtracting your last meter reading from your current one.

Base operates differently from traditional power companies. Instead of profiting directly from customers, Base earns revenue by using grid-balancing software paired with outage prediction technology. This approach optimizes the Base battery for both grid stability and outage protection.

When the grid is functioning, Base uses its batteries to support grid balancing. This strengthens the grid’s resilience and generates income for Base.

This model eliminates the incentive to raise member rates, avoiding hidden fees and unexpected rate hikes common with other providers. By leveraging its network of batteries for grid balancing, Base maintains low rates for members while remaining profitable.

Your first payment will be charged on the day your battery is installed.

After that, your payment will be automatically charged to your card each month on the same calendar date as your installation. This payment is separate from your utility bill, and you’ll receive a separate confirmation for it.

You can track your payment plan progress in your Base account.

Base owns and operates the battery and is responsible for all maintenance and service. You agree not to move, tamper with, or enroll the battery in any external programs. Base’s software optimizes the battery’s energy to help you withstand outages and save money each month.

  • Paid – This bill was paid successfully.
  • No payment due — This bill had a negative or <$0.50 balance, therefore no payment is due. If your bill is negative, Base rolls over your credits to the following month.
  • Scheduled — The bill is due in the future.
  • Payment failed  – There was an issue attempting to charge the card on file; please add a valid payment method on your Base Dashboard.
  • Carried forward – Your payment method on file could not be charged, and you did not add a valid payment method before your next bill – so Base added your previous unpaid bill to your next bill.

As Base is in beta, backup energy should not be used for life-critical devices and cannot be guaranteed. Base’s algorithms are designed to maintain a critical amount of capacity, but Base cannot guarantee they will function in the worst-case scenario. Therefore, medical equipment should not rely solely on Base for backup. As we continue to develop Base’s prediction software and battery network, backup duration and performance will improve over time.

When the grid is up and running, Base charges and discharges the battery while performing grid balancing operations, allowing you to enjoy a low upfront cost and monthly energy savings.

On average, the Base battery has a 93% state of charge over the course of a month.

Base will not discharge the battery below 20%, ensuring you have enough capacity to cover most outages.

When the grid goes down, you have exclusive access to the battery for backup power. Base will not and cannot discharge energy to the grid during an outage.

Base’s beta outage prediction technology protects members from 97% of outages. As Base improves its prediction software and the battery network, backup duration and performance will improve over time.

Base covers 100% of the maintenance for the battery in cases of manufacturing or installation defects, as well as damages outside of your control (e.g., weather events).

However, if the damage is due to negligence or intentional acts, you will be responsible for the full replacement costs.

Our system offers 20-50 kWh capacity with an 11 kW inverter, making it one of the largest home backup systems available. It is built to back up your entire home, covering more appliances than any other home backup solution.

The battery is also UL certified for safety, fire safety rated, and designed for outdoor installation with a 15-year lifespan.

You can review specs on our specs page.

The battery is placed outside your house near your meter. The right configuration depends on your home’s layout, energy needs, and space availability (see NEC requirements below).

We have 3 main battery configurations:

  1. Wall-mounted battery (20 kWh): 58.5" tall x 27.17" wide.
  2. Ground-mounted battery (25 kWh): (1) 4' tall cube with a 3'x3' base.
  3. Two ground mounted batteries (50 kWh): (2) 4' tall cubes with 3'x3' bases, 3' apart from each other.

Our team handles everything on installation day. You just need to be reachable by text in case we need to contact you. You don’t need to be home unless your main panel is in your garage.

Installation is an all-day process, starting as early as 8 a.m. and finishing as late as 6 p.m. Here’s what to expect:

  • Material drop-off: Our team will drop off a pallet of materials in advance.
  • Crew arrival: The installation crew will arrive between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.
  • Power disconnection: Prepare for a 1-2 hour window when power to your home will be temporarily turned off. This happens while we reconfigure your wiring to enable backup functionality.
  • Cleanup: Base’s team will return later that day or the next morning to collect any leftover equipment and boxes.

After the installation, please login to your Base Dashboard and input your Wi-Fi network name and password. A permanent Wi-Fi connection is required for the battery to function properly.

How long your Base battery lasts depends on four main factors:

  1. How much power you use: This is the most important factor. A battery stores a fixed amount of energy when the grid is down, so running high-usage devices (like A/C or laundry machines) will shorten backup time, just like a bigger water hose will drain a bucket more quickly. Reducing your power usage will extend it. We deploy larger batteries than the typical market size so that you can last longer.

  2. Battery charge at the start of an outage: Backup time depends on how charged your battery is when the power goes out. Base actively monitors charge levels, maintaining an average 93% charge over the course of a month. Our outage prediction technology tries to ensure that your battery has over 90% charge before outages, even though we sometimes lower it to 20% to perform our grid-balancing operations.

  3. How many batteries you have: Most homes get one battery (20-25 kWh), though some may qualify for two batteries (50 kWh). More batteries mean more backup power.

  4. Additional generation sources: Base batteries integrate with solar panels, which can extend your backup duration during an outage.

We calculate backup duration based on your battery's charge level and capacity. The high range shows backup time 90% of the time, while the low range reflects a 10% chance of a lower charge during an outage. Backup time won’t go below the low range unless appliance usage increases.

Here is a breakdown of how energy usage translates to battery duration:

  • Low usage (e.g., fridge, freezer, and lights):
    • Single battery: 30–40 hours
    • Two batteries: 60–81 hours
  • Average usage (typical appliances, some A/C):
    • Single battery: 10–13 hours
    • Two batteries: 20–27 hours
  • High usage (heavy appliances like A/C or electric heaters):
    • Single battery: 2–3 hours
    • Two batteries: 4–5 hours

When your power goes out, we’ll notify you and monitor your battery’s status. If it’s running low, we’ll recommend turning off high-usage appliances to extend your backup time.

As Base’s prediction software and battery network continue to improve over time, backup duration and performance will improve over time.

Below is a graph that shows our most recent data on the state of charge of the Base battery fleet (Base updates this monthly).

As you can see: over 90% of members’ batteries have maintained an average charge of 90% or higher, with more than half of the batteries consistently at 100%:

Key Takeaways:

  • Our average state of charge over the course of a month is 93%.
  • The majority of the time (>90%), batteries are charged above 95%.
  • A small minority (<10%) our batteries at around 70%.

Base ensures that battery charge does not drop below 20%, which covers 97% of outages at low usage.

Base offers three different system configurations. The right configuration depends on your home’s layout, energy needs, and space availability.

  • Single Ground Mounted: A single-unit system is great for most homes. It’s mounted on the ground and fits into smaller outdoor areas.
  • Double Ground Mounted: A two-unit system is great for homes with a lot of outdoor space and high energy needs.
  • Wall Mounted: A single-unit system is best for houses with limited outdoor space. It’s mounted on a wall, either indoors or outdoors.

The battery will automatically kick in within a half-second of an outage. No action is required from you!

Our Base batteries provide whole-home backup to most homes, ensuring all appliances on your main panel — including your A/C — stay powered during an outage.

However, keep in mind that higher energy usage shortens the duration of your backup and if you’re pulling a lot of power at once, it can overwhelm the system.

Managing your energy usage during an outage can help maximize your battery's performance and duration.

The US Energy Information Administration gives us some rough percentages that are helpful for understanding where your electricity is going:

  • Air conditioning and heating: 54% of your total energy use
  • Appliances and electronics : 23% of your total energy use
  • Water heating 16% of your total energy use
  • Refrigeration 4% of your total energy use
  • Lighting 4% of your total energy use

Turning off non-critical devices such as appliances and electronics, as well as reducing use of A/C and heating can meaningfully extend the duration of your battery backup.

A soft-start is an electrical device that reduces the high surge of current when your A/C compressor starts up.

For some members, soft-starts are necessary to ensure their Base battery can back up the entire home during an outage. Whether a soft-start is required depends on the type of A/C unit you have.

Here’s why:

  • When an A/C starts, there’s an initial electrical surge known as locked rotor amps (LRA).
  • Older A/C units typically have higher surge levels, which can exceed the Base system’s capacity to handle these spikes.
  • A soft-start helps temper this surge, making it compatible with the system.

If a soft-start is required for your A/C, Base will let you know during the intake process. Base’s HVAC partner will then schedule the installation as part of your setup—at no additional cost to you.

Safety is at the foundation of everything Base does. The Base battery system is UL certified, which is the gold standard of electrical systems safety for all home appliances. It is also fire safety rated. Base contracts certified, bonded, insured, and licensed electricians. They work under Base’s master electrician, who operates with license #476697.

In the unlikely event of a problem, we're prepared to work with you to handle it responsibly. Additionally, Base is in charge of all warranty and maintenance of the battery. Base has comprehensive general liability insurance to address any unforeseen incidents

Yes. Base integrates with most solar panels to help extend backup duration.

However, automatic standby generators currently do not qualify for integration.

Nice! If your bill is negative, that means one of two things – Base has credited your account as a reward for referrals, or your solar buybacks have credited your account more than you’ve used that month.

If you have credits that make your bill negative, Base rolls over your credits to the following month.

  • Space for Battery: Keep the Base battery system at least 3 feet from all windows, doors, and gas meter vent outlets, per safety codes (NFPA 855 & NFPA 54).

  • Main Panel Placement: Main panels cannot be placed in closets, as they must stay away from flammable materials (NEC 240.24(D)).

  • Meter Height: Meters must be installed no higher than 6 feet off the ground for safe access, as per local utility rules.

  • Interlock for Portable Generators: If using a plug-in portable generator, install an interlock on the main panel to ensure safe operation (NEC 702.4(B)).

  • Clear Space in Front of Meter and Main Panel: Maintain at least 30 x 36 inches of clear space in front of the meter and main panel for easy access and safety (NEC 110.26(A)(1)).

  • Meter and Conduit Integrity: Ensure the meter and conduit are securely attached and undamaged to meet installation standards (NEC 110.12(B)).

If your home does not meet NEC standards, Base can help recommend a local electrician to assist with tasks like installing an interlock or relocating a main panel. Once your home meets code, you’re good to go.

The timeline as to when Base is available in each city is dependent upon the requirements and permitting of each city authority.

The best way to check if you currently serve your area is to check your address below.

You can review our Electricity Facts Labels (EFLs) here

In deregulated markets—where you can choose your energy provider—power companies are required to provide an EFL. This document includes all the key details about a plan. EFLs are designed to help you make an informed decision when selecting your electricity provider.

Base Power Company is the only retail energy provider (REP) that provides a backup battery to members for outage protection.

We are also one of the only power companies that makes money off the grid, not homeowners. Because of this, Base is able to legally commit that rates stay below the market average—a guarantee included in your contract when you join Base. While you still pay for your power usage, you enjoy a lower fixed rate of $0.085/Kwh (plus other distribution fees) compared to other power companies.

Base prioritizes transparency in member pricing, and consistently evaluates rates to stay competitive and price members fairly. Whether you have questions about your bill, choosing the right plan, or want guidance on your device, the Base team is committed to handling concerns in a timely and personalized manner.

By owning the batteries, Base can operate the battery software to stabilize energy distribution and earn income off energy price fluctuations—setting Base apart from other solutions.

Here’s what this means for you:

  • No Maintenance Costs: Base handles all service and repairs at no cost, replacing the battery if needed throughout its lifespan.
  • Lower Rates: By leveraging grid-balancing software, Base keeps homeowner rates below market averages while stabilizing the grid.

Base’s business model prioritizes members over short-term profits, ensuring you benefit from fair rates and reliable service.

And during outages, you have exclusive access to your stored energy, protected by law—meaning Base can’t legally discharge it to the grid during these times.

To maximize backup duration:

  1. Most important: Temper or turn off usage of power-hungry appliances like A/C units, electric heaters, or large washers/dryers.
  2. Reduce power usage to essentials like a fridge, freezer, and a few lights.
  3. Get portable electric heaters or air conditioner units that consume less power and can move with you through the home.
  4. Bonus for complete peace of mind: Plan for generation sources like solar panels or compatible generators to supplement the battery.

Base batteries are designed to last up to 15 years and withstand extreme temperatures.

Base retains ownership of the battery for its entire lifespan, which means we warranty and handle any necessary maintenance on the system – at no cost to you. We will also replace the battery if necessary.

Base batteries operate within ambient temperatures ranging from -10°C to 50°C (14°F to 122°F).

Each battery module is equipped with four temperature sensors that continuously monitor the temperature. Charging or discharging is automatically disabled if the batteries become too hot, effectively preventing overheating.

The batteries have been rigorously tested and have passed the internationally recognized UL9540A safety test. This ensures that, even if a single cell overheats beyond safe limits for any reason, the other cells and nearby walls remain protected from thermal damage.

Our software needs constant connectivity to monitor battery health, optimize energy trading with the grid, predict potential outages, and track your energy usage and savings.

This connection ensures you get the most value from your battery while maintaining its performance and reliability.
